Reconnecting the city: landscaping as a tool for connecting culture and nature

This semester, our work focused on the city of Athens, highlighting the transformation of its river landscape, where the river is now integrated into the urban fabric, leaving little open and underutilized space.
I selected an emblematic site: an old sports complex whose current state reflects abandonment and structural degradation.

Objective: Rehabilitate the entire surface by developing landscape interventions (pocket parks) that evoke the city’s identity and origins.

The Challenge

The major challenge of this intervention lay in the physical separation between the sports complex and the rest of the city, marked by a highway. My role was to design an innovative infrastructure solution: the construction of a tunnel connecting both banks. This tunnel will be integrated into a sophisticated wetland system, featuring ramps that link this transformed public space to the city.

Project

In the upper part of the project, facing the hill, I designed a museum dedicated to the ruins of the Temple of Artemis, currently in a state of degradation, to highlight its rich historical heritage.
Finally, a central structure connects the levels: a building housing an elevator leading to a bridge spanning the entire wetland system, providing a direct link to the city center.

This project aims to valorize the surrounding archaeological sites and offer the city new multifunctional spaces for diverse activities.
